Here's a really simple way to make a decent looking banner.

Change the colors around to your liking, basically everything's optional, leave out the flames and such, or change the values of different things.

Other things to try: -have your text layer selected, go to Script-fu - Shadow - Perspective -in the 'Xach Effect' dialogue, change the highlight / shadow colors around -experiment with some effects in Filters - Artistic
